Frequently asked questions

Spinbase is an AI-based funding search tool that uses natural language as an input. By entering your idea or project abstract, you will find suitable funding instruments, other players interested in the same kind of subjects, and information to refine your plans. The search engine works based on semantic analysis, thus provides more versatile results than traditional searches.

Semantic analysis in simple English means to figure out the meaning of linguistic input (construct meaning representations).

Natural Language Processing is the technology used to aid computers to understand the human’s natural language. Natural Language Processing, usually shortened as NLP, is a branch of artificial intelligence that deals with the interaction between computers and humans using the natural language. The ultimate objective of NLP is to read, decipher, understand, and make sense of the human languages in a manner that is valuable. Most NLP techniques rely on machine learning to derive meaning from human languages.

The results in Spinbase are consisting of three groups. First group is classified under the “Funding” tab and are basically the funding topics / instruments. Second group is called “Partners” that are the list of organizations that have similar background and implemented similar projects to our topic in the text query. And finally, the third group is called “Projects” that are the list of all the projects that has been funded by EC relevant to our text query.

This is the score that our AI engine give to each one of the search results. It means that AI has read the whole text you provided as search query and analyzed it word by word and then semantically compared that with the texts associated with each result in our entire database with millions of data, and as a result it is recommending that the higher the score is, there is a better match. The similarity score needs to be viewed relatively and not absolutely.

As a search query, we recommend entering the text for your idea looking for funding and partners. Longer description leads to better and more comprehensive results. Examples of good search texts are project descriptions, company profiles, research topic abstracts or press releases. However, since our search engine works based on Natural Language Processing and Semantic analysis, you are free to also add a free format text, including keywords or any other type of texts.

The results are ordered based on the best matching texts. Meaning that the first results is closer matching to the text that your provided as query than the second result. Same works for the difference between the second result and the third one and for the rest of the results.

Spinbase service is partly based on information from European Union open data.

There are different structures for different programmes offered by EC. However the largest programme which is called Horizon has the following structure: Programme -> Pillars -> Clusters -> Destinations -> Calls: each call includes several topics. -> Topics: these are the topics we are showing as search results in our funding tab.

EU jargon often refers to something called TRL. This stands for Technology Readiness Level. TRLs are method of estimating the maturity of technologies, originally developed by NASA in the 1970’s. The EU prefers to use the same technique in some of its funding instruments. The projects that start from the lower levels of TRL (1–4) focus on research and development. The projects that are higher in the TRL scale, are usually for technology validation (TRL 4–6), close-to-market innovations and scaling up (TRL 6–9).
